A General Explanation of the Buddha Speaks of Amitabha Sutra
Paperback Price: $12.00
eBook Price: $5.00
The Amitabha Sutra (or the “Shorter Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra”) continues to be the foundation of spiritual practice for millions of Buddhists throughout the ages. Though the shortest of the three Pure Land sutras, this Sutra is by no means less important nor is it just a summary of the other two. Spoken spontaneously by Shakyamuni Buddha, quite unlike the usual practice of speaking Dharma on request, the very fact that no one knew to ask shows the extreme importance and inconceivability of this specific Dharma.
This shorter Amitabha Sutra describes Buddha Amita’s Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss (Chinese: 西方極樂國), where conditions are perfect for practicing the Buddhist Way. The Sutra also describes the method of how to be reborn in that land, mainly through mindfulness of Buddha Amita.
Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua’s lively commentary further elucidates the text, providing many interesting anecdotes as analogies to the Sutra’s main concepts.
This volume, combining the Sutra with Master Hua’s commentary, succeeds not only in introducing the Pure Land Buddhist practice, but also effectively presents its timeless relevance to the present.
